Did you ever think that he may not be thinking what you think he’s thinking?

Never trust anyone just because of their title: Pastor. Priest. Teacher. Gymnastics Instructor. Trainer. Police. Judge. Father. Husband. Friend. Shepherd.

It never automatically comes with a position or role.

Trust is earned and continually proven.

It’s never awarded.

I recall being taught that ‘trust your pastor’ was a wonderful given. We were to trust him. And the other leaders.

And trust would be wonderful. Easy. No problem. After all, they were all called ‘elders’.

And … over time… my trust became one-way disclosure, and them gossiping about my confidences.

Can you imagine licensed professional LCSWs meeting, and gossiping about their client’s details? And the next time you meet your counselor, he/she would say, “Well… I had to reveal what you said to the Board of Counselors – uh…for the sake of the Body of Christ. And the Elders of the LCSWs have decided that you should….” ????

Those professionals would lose their licenses. Easily.

But I forgot that the church hierarchy is made up of non-professionals… perhaps one had a MDiv, and another a BS in Bible… but they were not certified professionals in any counseling discipline.

Of course they gossiped. Of course they made pronouncements. What was I thinking??

I would have saved myself much turmoil by adopting the more realistic, “Over time, if an elder earns my trust, I will be revealing to him.”

But I was in too much rush to find comfort among the non-professionals. And paid dearly more than once.

    Never again.

  2. That’s the story of so many. Including me.
