A parable for our changing concepts of God

The wood represents the ideas that fuel our concepts about God.

The fire represents the comfort we receive from our concepts about God.

The smoke represents the concepts of God that no longer serve us.

I think we would all be wise to recognize this process in our own theological and philosophical development.

we as humans must ignite the fire

I love how our present concepts (fire) of God give way to our past concepts (smoke) which leads to our future concepts (wood). The wood is the very foundation of the fire and smoke. We evolve over time, and return to our roots.

I like the analogy of ‘concepts’ being our ‘fire’.

    – If the concepts are dying embers, we need to explore adding wood…. or perhaps find new sources of heating comfort.

    – If the concepts are a raging fire that are destroying you, then ‘back away from the fire’, and do not add more wooden logs… just a few sticks now and then will do.

In my mind, God does not change within our perception. But our concepts must change.

  5. Yes. Our concepts are just thoughts. And the thought is not the thing. Thanks Caryn.
