Why does it seem like the more religious someone becomes, the less open-minded they become and the less kind they become?

Hey! I know this personally. Like I share in my new book, Questions Are The Answer , my wife once told me that the more spiritual I get the more of a jerk I become.

Now I know that an open and questioning mind… an intelligent mind, and a kind and compassionate heart… an open heart, are the best manifestations of an advanced spirituality and true religion.

At The Lasting Supper, we do not determine where you should end up in your spiritual journey! Lol David.

I hear what you say about the more “religious” and the more “spiritual”. the greater jerk.

I like the way someone I know put it. “It doesn’t matter how good, kind, nice I am because if that also comes out of self effort, so from flesh then they are just as much “sin” as any of the obvious “bad” flesh. I exhausted myself being good, kind, nice, helpful because as a good Christian that is what I was supposed to be/do. It took me years to realise that I was still working out of the old man… it was impossible. It is only as I saw this, and experienced the revelation… that I saw it was… not [about] my effort to be the “good Christian”.”

I think what she is talking about is approval. I can relate to that – the more educated I became the higher my status was and the more people listened to me the greater temptation there was for it for me to be about my ego and not about love. I can see why some leaders go off the rails.

Love what you say about kindness, compassion and open heart and ind as well as intelligence and questioning. I’ve had to learn about compassion being priority and not about achievements however much I might seek and get approval for that latter.

As Tom Cruise’s character in Top gun was told by the shi commander “Maverick, your ego is writing cheques your body can’t cash”, it’s a fine line between confidence and arrogance I find!
