    It’s a real mess, that’s for sure.

What a great opportunity to speak to someone and tie it all back to the cross and then back again to the manger.

Then Christmas will mean a lot more than it does today.

When I was studying I did a subject with John Drane (of McDonaldization of the Church fame). We spent a fair bit of time examining how even the architecture of many malls recall the European cathedrals. The cruciform central nave and transept, various chapels off to the sides in which to ‘worship’, high roofed central areas, even the advertisements replacing stained glass windows as the ‘poor man’s bible’ depicting scenes of ‘worship’ designed to be exhortations toward similar acts.

Take a look at a hall shot of something like the Salisbury Cathedral, Basilica San Lorenzo, or even something as early as Santa Sabina and with the tiniest imagination (just put shops in the arches) and you’d think you were at a mall.

I cannot stand the malls during this time of the year and wish Christians would make a point to separate out what Christmas actually means with this craziness instead of crying “War on Christmas” when the stores attempt neutrality.

A clever sketch depicting today’s Christmas emphasis.
An opportunty to go against the tide, even within the broader church.
    Good comment Steve.
