If it was all about what I felt, or what I thought, or what I did...I'd be sunk for sure.

I'm glad I don't have to feel saved...to know that I am saved.

. What's weird about the deadness, are claims from others to feel sumthing like vibrations coming off the body. One person's pen is another's phone.

They used to tell me, "Don't trust your feelings, trust God." Then I'd go to Sunday meetings, and it was ALL about feelings: setting, mood, allegory, guilt, hope, comraderie... WTF? If God can't be felt, what good is he? We shrivel and die for lack of feeling.

I like the metaphor of a turn-of-the-20th Century Irish wife left home while her husband goes to America to start a new life for them. Communication happens only a couple of times a year with a six-month lag, lots of reminiscing, frequent stops to sigh or shed a tear as she gazes on their wedding photo prominently displayed, talking about him until her friends can almost bear no more...

I think we have a hard time with the imagination that faithfulness requires. On that point, all the "just experience being" folks like Tolle have a good point.

When I can get to a place where my anxiety-ridden thoughts leave me alone for a while and just be (in the woods is nice) and pay attention to what I experience from everything else that's just being, I can feel how it's doing. Reality constantly exudes state information. Trees tell a lot about patience, flexibility, strength, and always looking up. Flowers tell a lot about joy, exuberance, and looking up. Even the pesky flies tell a lot about curiosity and persistence. Lots to see and hear, and I always come home feeling better, closer to the good side of things.

Here is the thing, if the phone did vibrate would you trust it? I am not so sure I would. I would be reassured that it vibrated, but I think I would walk away.

<i> I am afraid love, forgiveness, compassion, and kindness exist in ways you can't imagine.</i>... and you for some reason can't talk about. Would that not be exactly the message you would like to spread?

Thank you for the reply Brigitte. But the reply shows me it would take far to long to have a meaningful conversation with you in the blog sound bites. I am afraid love, forgiveness, compassion, and kindness exist in ways you can't imagine. I hope your god keeps workin' for you.

Will you tell me something that atheism can tell me when my life is falling apart? What is the hope? That is the question.

I haven't heard that other religions teach the forgiveness of sins. In Hinduism and Buddhism, if you've been bad, your reincarnation won't be good. In Islam, watch out because Allah weighs everything very carefully. None of those systems are about forgiveness. In Atheism one generally hears now, that the individual is being good without God/god. So I don't hear about forgiveness from the atheist either. In Daoism everything goes by auspicious days and numbers.

Once I talked with a recent immigrant from India in a mall while watching a flu clinic in a mall. He was concerned that the vaccination would be unhealthy. I tried to reassure him that it would be fine to get the vaccination. He was a real talker and he talked a great length about the powerful forces under domes in India, how you can make a living on just a few acres, etc. After quite some time, I thought I really should say something, too, so I interrupted him and said: "I am a Christian and I believe in forgiveness of sins". He turned to me in great surprise and said: "But why do you sin? You should not sin!" I explained to him about our human heart and how we sin even when it does not look like it. Sermon on the mount stuff. He understood immediately. He knew that he had a heart like that, too, once I told him.

<b>@ David</b>,

Your excellent drawing reminds me of the Buddhist Yogini "<a href="http://www.aroencyclopaedia.org/shared/text/y/ytx_th_01_01_full_eng.php" rel="nofollow">Yeshé Tsogyel</a>". Interestingly, "Yeshé" means "primordial wisdom". She is a Sophia totally comfortable with tangling free hair and her body. Sophia jumping into full color!

As I know from your fine interview, you enjoy the wisdom of many traditions, so I thought I would share.

@ Brigitte
Do you feel that people who don't believe as you, don't read the Bible for inspiration and who don't have the Holy Spirit living in their heart (or however else you wish to put it), can forgive or be forgiven like you can? Or do you believe that your type of Christians have a monopoly on it? [or likewise, with comfort, love, joy and many other human experiences]
