I had this image appear to me in a dream. It is Jesus suffering, lying on the ground, surrounded by precious stones. It was a powerful still image. The gems were bursting with color. I drew it the morning I awakened from the dream.
I didn’t know what it meant when I had it. I’m still not sure. But it evoked feelings of awe. It says something about the value of his suffering. It says something about its cost. It says something about the contrast of his suffering to the wealth of this world. It says something. Something.

Sophia "Solitary" (drawing by David Hayward)
This drawing is one of my first Sophias. I remember the feelings I had when I was drawing it. There was something peaceful but at the same time foreboding about it. She looks confident. But at the same time she doesn’t look safe. There is something very vulnerable about her here.
It’s not that she’s naive. I think it’s that she doesn’t have a choice. She’s escaped her bondage and is all alone. She must take this journey. It is going to take her down treacherous paths. She has to trust.
So she’s stopped to catch her breath and enjoy a simple pleasure.

My provocative yet popular drawing of Sophia “Trapped’ (available as a print here) has been used as the cover image for Cynthia McClaskey’s new book, Religion’s Cell: Doctrines of the Church That Lead to Bondage and Abuse (<–click there to order from Amazon!) I was overjoyed to see “Cover Art by David Hayward right on the front cover! Wow!
Cynthia and I have been in communication for some time about this happening. I was so pleased to get my personally signed hardcover copy from Cynthia today, along with a lovely thank-you note.
I’m so happy that Sophia means so much to so many. This is just another encouragement for me to keep pressing on with her important and relevant story.
Success to you Cynthia!

"Sun Sets Moon Rises" (painted on iPhone with "Brushes" app, by David Hayward)
Yes, it has set,
the brightest light.
At least for a time.
At least for the night.
See the moon rise,
fairest of lights.
It will bring me peace
and adorn my sight.
I will await
the dawn of day.
I know it shall come
and lighten my way.
I “painted” the above image with my finger using the “Brushes” app on my iPhone. It is a scene from the river in front of my house. The sun had just set, blasting an array of colour across the horizon. The full moon was rising in all its splendour.
My daughter Casile has a small saying she always repeats: “Have hope!”
That’s what the moon meant to me that night.

"Talitha Koum" (ink and graphite drawing, by David Hayward)
“Talitha Koum” is what I call my drawing. It is based on Mark’s account of Jesus raising the little girl from death. He pronounced over her “Talitha Koum“, which means, “Little girl, arise!”
“Waiting” isn’t really accurate. When you are dead you aren’t aware of it. You are completely dead… spiritually, consciously, physically.
But when you hear the call “Arise!“. I have experienced what Paul calls “resurrection power“. I cannot really categorize it. All I know is that once I was dead and now I’m alive. I can say that now. Looking back. Comparing now to then. While I was dead I was completely unaware of it. Dead.
But one day while I was sitting on the couch talking with my wife, I suddenly, shockingly, surprisingly, disgustingly, realized I was dead. And it was at that very moment when I was suddenly offered the gift of a new life.
So be encouraged: once you know you are dead, that is actually the moment when the words “Arise!” have been spoken over you. You are no longer dead. You are beginning to receive the gift of new life. Believe me: if you know you are dead, you are no longer. You are alive!
Then begins the work. A very joyous kind.

"Sophia Waiting" (woodcut print on paper, by David Hayward)
This is a woodcut print that I made a couple of years ago. I’ve decided to add it to my Sophia collection. It is in the same spirit. It captures the same mood and weaves itself into the same story of a woman on her own path to self-discovery and independence.
Here Sophia waits, gazing out the window. True love will come. She instinctively knows what it looks like. She will settle for nothing less.
I totally believe in the maxims “Follow your bliss!“, and “Pursue your happiness!“. However, I also believe that there are times when one should wait. It is good advice to receive: wait for true love. Don’t settle! Don’t just go after that which promises immediate gratification or a quick jolt of happiness. Wait! A truer and deeper happiness will come.
One of the worst times to make a decision for happiness might be when you are really desperate for it and very frustrated with your present situation. I’ve discovered that sometimes waiting and wading through it brings you to a deeper happiness than one could ever imagine possible and that would be completely missed if you acted on your immediate desires.
Settle for nothing less. Wait.
