Lots of drama in my life right now. None of it is to do with me. Everyone else around me. Although I do start my new job on Monday teaching international students at Saint John College in the University of New Brunswick. ‘Nuff said.

There are times when there is absolute silence. The heavens are as brass. Our ears are deaf. We can never truly discern which one it is. If the Spirit is silent, all we can do is ride it out like a test. In any case, the best thing to do is to become self-aware. Do an interior examine of your mind. How have you shut down yourself? Has something within you died?

I remember this hymn from the earliest years of my life. It’s always been one of my favorites. Some years ago I realized it must be because it is in nature that I have the strongest sense of the Blessed. Especially at night with a clear sky and all the stars are shining. The atmosphere is absolutely full of Benediction.
Last night Lisa and I dug out a bottle of wine we were keeping for a special time. It was a decent bottle: Rosemount Shiraz. We went out on our front patio overlooking the moonlit river. We turned out all of our lights, indoors and out, and the stars in the night sky came alive! We looked for shooting stars and passing satellites. We enjoyed the blessed silence salted with occasional conversation.
It was Blessed. It was Anointed. It was Benediction.

There are some who long for the past. There are others who long for the future. The promise brings these two and unites then in the present. The present isn’t full of fulfillment. Instead, it is full of our contentment, our satisfaction. Our gratitude.

There are some pretty severe theologies of God out there. It seems to me that love, the radically gracious love that we can read about in the bible, trumps all theologies. It seems to me that the kind of love God requires of us is at least the kind of love he would require of himself. We are asked to give up everything for love. God did. Even himself.

Some days there is just no getting through.
ADDED NOTE POST-POST: This would’ve been better if I had gone to one room in my house where there is no coverage for my cell phone. It would’ve said, “No Service” at the top. Dang!
