Is it possible for people of different faiths or no faiths to live in peace with one another? I do. I believe that essentially we are already one, that unity is a reality indiscernible to many, and our work is to make this unity manifest. There have been times and there have been places where a vast diversity of people have lived in peace, respected the others’ right to their own beliefs, and cultivated communication and even community amongst themselves.

For some the connections are easy. For others it is harder to see. Some people just won’t connect the dots. Unfortunately, it’s not just a game. Here’s a question I often ask myself: Do people exclude others because they believe God does, or do some people reject others and shape their god to fit their exclusive attitude? In other words, does our god shape our belief, or does our belief shape our god?

I always thought I didn’t like cats. I’ve always had a dog. Last year when Jesse moved to another city to go to University, he got a cat. Oh no! We went to visit. I fell in love with the cat. Bongo was his name oh.
Did you know people are divided into camps as dog-lovers or cat-lovers? Now I’m confused. Can’t I love both equally? Do I have to be ashamed to say I love cats to dog-people? Or do I have to be afraid to say I love dogs to cat-people? Even though both species are so radically different and it is almost impossible for them to get along or agree on anything, can’t I have a place in my heart for both? May there come a day when the dog will lie down with the cat. Amen.

There are some who long for the past. There are others who long for the future. The promise brings these two and unites then in the present. The present isn’t full of fulfillment. Instead, it is full of our contentment, our satisfaction. Our gratitude.

There are some pretty severe theologies of God out there. It seems to me that love, the radically gracious love that we can read about in the bible, trumps all theologies. It seems to me that the kind of love God requires of us is at least the kind of love he would require of himself. We are asked to give up everything for love. God did. Even himself.

Some days there is just no getting through.
ADDED NOTE POST-POST: This would’ve been better if I had gone to one room in my house where there is no coverage for my cell phone. It would’ve said, “No Service” at the top. Dang!
