from my cell: cable

cable

My iPhone cellphone is still simply amazing. One of my regrets: I haven’t used the few slip-sleeve covers I’ve purchased for it. Neither have I used the screen protectors. I like handling the device as is. And the text-messaging is slick and fast. One thing I do notice though: I don’t use the iPod function on it hardly at all. I’m usually pretty close to my computer and just use the iTunes on there. Or when I’m at home, I use my regular iPod plugged into my stereo.

superman

The concept from this cartoon came to me while I was mowing my lawn yesterday. I had my massive Sony MDR-V700 headphones on, plugged into my iPod, and was listening to Eminem’s new cds, “Relapse”, and the entirely offensive but honest “Christopher Reeves” song came on. Pow! The cartoon popped into my head… a leader receiving a gift, a present, a power present… a superman costume, that he doesn’t have to wear in plain view, but under his clothes like Clark Kent! Nobody needs to know.

Small Groups Community Glue

May 28, 2009  |  thought  |  68 Comments  |

We had a good small group meeting last night. There was raw honesty and real care happening. It got me thinking about the incredible value of smaller groups for the strengthening of the glue of community. Here’s some suggestions I would give for a healthy small group:

  1. Create an atmosphere where judgment is never given or experienced… ever!
  2. The leader, if there is one, must be just as vulnerable as the rest.
  3. Encourage everyone to come with the intention of comforting another.
  4. Remember: no struggle is too small. Pain is pain by the one experiencing it.
  5. Remember: no struggle is too big. Friends can alleviate the load.
  6. If stuff stops, just end it. Don’t keep something going just for the sake of it.
  7. Resist giving answers or solutions. Just listen and empathize.
  8. Be bold enough to prevent domination by anyone, including yourself.
  9. Never, ever express shock, dismay, or surprise.
  10. Practice #1 (this is the key to everything).

Give it a try. If it ain’t real, it ain’t real. You’re just playing make-believe pretend! Watch community happen.

rally

No, there aren’t actual placards out there. It’s hardly ever overt, although sometimes it is. But leaders can crave this kind of fanfare, this kind of adulation. And just as critical is that many people need someone to adore. The more popular their leader, the more they feel better about themselves. It’s codependence, but with a different kind of addiction.

Comatose Collectives

May 27, 2009  |  thought  |  5 Comments  |

Whether you like it or not, there are differing ideologies represented in your community. Even though there might be a primary teacher, and even thought there might be the appearance of homogeneity of thought, and even though this uniformity might be encouraged and even legislated, everyone thinks their own thoughts. What you might have is an oppressed people afraid to speak their minds, nodding their heads in feigned agreement while their minds are far from you. Or, all you have is a comatose collective. And we don’t want that, do we? Do we?

Committed to Love

May 26, 2009  |  thought  |  11 Comments  |

This last weekend I was at a conference. One day one of the speakers spoke on love. I was moved to desire to love more deeply. Here’s some of the commitments I made:

  1. I relinquish all control of others, and commit to the liberation all people.
  2. I choose to be kind, even to the meanest.
  3. I celebrate the success of others, even my enemies.
  4. I refuse to protect, secure or improve my reputation.
  5. I renounce pride, and consider others as better than I.
  6. I decline making demands, even when it would be expected and accepted.
  7. I forsake irritation, even with the most irritating.
  8. I quit resentment, and keep no record of any wrongs done against me.
  9. I work for and celebrate justice for others.
  10. I propagate the truth of unconditional love, confident that it will win the day.
  11. I will not give up on, lose faith in, or cease hoping for anyone.
  12. I choose a love that endures through all circumstances.

That should keep me occupied. At least for today.
