Just read headlines about an earthquake off Sumatra. Those of us the west coast of North America could (probably will) experience a big one in the future. Stay away from pillars!

This is unbelievable. I had an argument with someone about earthquakes because she reckoned it must be near the end of the world because there were more earthquakes now. I checked with my nephew who is studying geophysics and apparently there are NOT more earthquakes now. Immediately after that and following on from the Haiti one, there were immediately three more in different countries – Chile, Taiwan and now Sumatra – all in about a week! Even I’m starting to have my doubts…and then there’s that big methane lake in Russia. What if it just blows? I bet my friend is feeling smug.

The lectionary reading for this week is Luke 13 vs 1-9: a story of disciples who demand answers for the inexplicable. And of Jesus who tells a parable about a landowner expecting a predictable result from his fig tree. The sequence is logical and simple, plant a fig tree, expect fruit, after three fruitless seasons get rid of the resource sapping barren tree. But the gardener, pleads for clemency, for just another chance. “Maybe there is a mystery at work here you and I don’t understand. Let me feed and mulch the tree and if there is still no fruit next year. Go ahead and chop it down.“
In this passage it is as if Jesus is saying, “You can’t go around making pronouncements about the deeply mysterious tragedies of life, as if you somehow know how these things work!”

Why are people so willing to believe that other people have a secret pipeline to God? They just know God did something. They just know what he’s gonna do. They even know WHY he did something or will do something. I would ask:

    How do they know?

Was it a feeling? A thought? A voice? An audible voice?
Do they have to send money to a preacher before the good thing happens? Or are they just trying to encourage you, which is a good thing. But speaking for God takes a lot of nerve, in my opinion.

Was it a feeling? A thought? A voice? An audible voice?(Lynn)

It depends on whether or not you inhaled. ;)

    Titfortat,

Hilarious! I guess the more you inhale, the stronger the message seems to you.

I remember years ago my brother foolishly smoked a lot(and I mean a lot) of Hashish. He then said to me that he “saw” God. My only response was, “no shit” I think I would have seen God too. :)

    Titfortat,

I like that response-”no shit!” I may use it sometime if I get up the nerve. My sister had advised me to ask lots of questions when a Christian tells me they’ve seen some aparition they think is the devil, or God has told them something.

I had a very nice lady who spoke of these things frequently tell me several times that other Christians think she’s nuts. So even the Christians don’t usually take it seriously.

I’m no brain expert, but I do realize that the human brain is capable of all kinds of weird stuff and is influenced by lots of different things. They never seem to consider any of that as a possible explanation. You know, like only Catholics seem to see the Virgin Mary, etc.

The Fundie’s don’t talk like that, but they believe that God let the KJV down from heaven on silken cords, and that that particular translation is wholly inspired and preserved by God.

Have you ever considered doing a line of greeting cards or calendars or a book of your cartoons? They would make such great gifts :) You’ve probably already thought of this and have a great, super spiritual reason for not doing it… But lemme know if you do!

My office is beginning to get covered up by nakedpastor cartoons. I shall sacrifice another Dilbert to make room for this one.
