I’ve always feared God’s silence taking it as some kind of rejection. As of late, I’ve has another thought – that God’s silence is, itself, an invitation for communion with him. As you can imagine, this is a great relief to me. It seems to be one of those “revelations” that stops me in my tracks and makes me reconsider all of the horrible moments of God’s silence in the past. Now, I recognize the yearning for moments of silence with God. I don’t know if this has anything to do with your quote from Merton, but I think of the fear of silence as nothingness and how God, in some sort of miraculous power, transforms it all (past and present) into such a beautiful experience of communion with him. Thanks for the quote and for the opportunity to put this into words.
i like what you said julia. there’s something curious about merton’s quote though, because i think he is talking about all the silence that is not God… just a thought.
