I’m not sure what you intended here..

But, now that he’s no longer relying on emotions, he’ll have to cling to Jesus all the harder.

maybe that’s the upside of depression?

My interpretation, or maybe my “gloss” on this one:

Some people see Christianity as another (perhaps the ultimate) self-help scheme. If you have faith in Jesus Christ, you will have a happy life and all will be great.

Into this mindset comes the Jesus Christ of the crucifixion; the Jesus Christ of suffering and death. Yes, there’s a resurrection; yes there’s joy. But for the true follower of Jesus, you can’t get to Easter Sunday without first going through Good Friday (and Holy Saturday).

About the time you life seems nice and safe, about the time you’re happy and secure, Jesus will cut you away from your parachute. Nothing that “saves” us, other than the actual, true, One who died for us, is a false savior and must be pruned away. Even (or maybe especially) if that false savior is a smiley-faced faith in the self-help Jesus.
