I have a question/topic for discussion – it’s probably something you’ve already addressed… but just in case…
who do you think church is for? what is the proper relationshp between leader/minister/vicar/pastor and congregation? Is church for Christians, or non-Christians, or both? Is there a useful proportion? Does the congregation/membership direct the minister, or is it the other way around, or a power-sharing arrangement, with different responsibilities?
I’ve been pondering this in relation to when a new minister takes over. Some things are naturally going to change – matters of style in preaching etc. The minister may even dissolve all the ministry teams and build them from scratch (ie “don’t call us, we’ll call you”).
I’ve never really thought about this question before.

I think that church is for all, but that it is the pastor’s job to keep worship centered on Word and sacrament (Christ) and to keep the worship in good order.
I think it is the congregation’s job to make sure that the pastor does his job, and to be a partner in making the church ‘work’.

Wow NP, I hadn’t thought of it like that, but you’re right – funny and purely coincidental!
What’s brought the question to mind is the situation where much changes – who has the ‘right’ to make the changes, do they have to consult? Who drives the change? Can the congregation say no? Is it done by vote? Do we assume the person driving the change has asked God what He thinks?
Hmmm!
Oh dear I feel challenged now.
