The cult of personality is sure coming on fast in many churches. That is a natural outcome of jettisoning many of the ‘anchors’ (to Christ) of ‘traditional church’ and gravitating to the seeker friendly models where the self is free to float hither and yon. You can end up anywhere and everywhere and usually with a strong personality to hold it all together.
Here in Southern Cal. we are surrounded by this stuff.
My predecessor (one of my favorite people) at my current church is fond of changing the subject of a conversation with these words: “Enough about me. Let’s talk about you… What do *you* think of me?”
This is in response to your Fakenaked 4 YouTube video, my response is too long so i thought I’d post it here, thanks.
I’m a yoga teacher with very much the same money concern. I can choose to teach the authoritarian style – do this, do that, basically “do like me” and most probably have enough students show up next time so I can get paid.
Lately however I’ve been encouraging people to let go of me, close their eyes, and listen within, to come to a state of YOGA ( connectedness with something, be it yourself, the people in the circle, or Source/God ) rather that just DO Yoga. Is that not the same as being a pastor ? Either you teach people to DO spirituality or you can be radical and encourage them to simply BE spiritual, to BE. Doesn’t pay well …so I may have to end up volunteering. Just like Shane said, sometimes I’m busting at the seams to teach, but it’s hard when you’re relying on ppl accepting your message to pay you to do it again…. what a strange cycle. I tell myself that whoever needs to be here today, is – including myself. And if I don’t need to be here next week, I won’t…
How many names would you like?
