I came across this song on Sufjan Stevens Christmas cds. This is just a clip of it that I made. As soon as I heard it, I said to Lisa that if my paintings could make noise, this is what they would sound like. There is something melancholic but hopeful, earthy but spiritual, cold but inviting, about my paintings and about this song. I thought I would just share this with you today. This painting is a rather large watercolor called Opposite Winter Shore. It’s sold.

Npastor,
Being one who does not give a twit about man made art, I must say this painting of your’s exposed a vastness of God to me, as I sat an stared at your picture, that became almost alive. I must tell you, I had God run through my body–He ran fast. I will seek Him out again through your painting. Thank you.

Great song. I’m a huge Sufjan fan, Dave. I also love his version of The Little Drummer Boy.
Love the painting. Too bad it is sold.
There’s a really good conversation about art and church taking place here with some of the top selling christian artists in the US. The person facilitating it is a friend and has invited anyone that’s interested in art and creativity to take place.
Everyone’s welcome!

David ~ I have to say that as I played the music and got lost in your painting, I actually did become part of the painting. The music is perfect! I actually felt a chill.
leave it to sufjan to have something so befitting. it fits perfectly.
If your paintings could make noise…
I had a conversation with a creative friend of mine recently, and mentioned how I “see” letters in different colors. Different types of music come in colors, too. For example, I might hear some music, which sounds “orange” to me. I was surprised when I discovered not everyone experienced this. My friend suggested that it is perhaps more common among creative people.
Your paintings make noise. I wonder, do letters/music/days of the week evoke colors to you? (Thursdays are always brown to me). Just wondering…
BTW, a wrote about this in this post.
Dear Danny,
I see letters and numbers, and music and other things, experiences, in certain colours.
They’ve given us a name – it’s called synaesthesia.
With Love,

thanks for helping me understand what it is I like about sufjan stevens, especially his christmas albums.
Sarah,
Thanks for the information. I never knew it had a name. After googling synaesthesia, I now know it also has a lengthy wikipedia entry and that there’s an American Synesthesia Association. I’m becoming more and more fascinated by this, especially since, up until a few months ago, I assumed that everyone saw things like letters and music in color.
Danny
Dan,
There was a lovely programme on the BBC about it, here is a link to the details of the programme if you are interested:

I knew people didn’t “do” this like me- but it is lovely, isn’t it? One of the gifts of seeing that God’s given us.
I remember as a young child, writing down the whole letters of the alphabet in the colours I knew they were. Secondarily, numbers. But, as you know, it’s also words, places, memories…
With love,

I just got Sufjan’s box set this year, It’s pretty good.
