Sadly, so many people see their deities as cosmic genies to implore for goodies on earth. They don’t get the point and are so much poorer for the experience. Religion can and will do nothing to prevent these people from being boneheads.
Without any data to back me up, I still believe this applies to a minority of Christians. Many of the ones I’ve run into sincerely want to be better people and ask for guidance in attaining that goal. Without religion these people would still be good people anyway. Like most of the people on this blog. :-)

Love the cartoon. I think we treat God like a genie because this is the prayer model we’re shown as small children. I can’t speak for anyone else, but as a young person, prayer at my churches was always about getting something from God. It wasn’t until adulthood that I learned that prayer could be so much more. :)

    Hah!

That reminds me of the one time I heard someone pray who I felt really had a friendship with God. He was merely saying grace or praying briefly at some function – but the simplicity and reality of how he spoke touched me and has influenced me ever since.

No fancy words, no religious words. Just real, from the heart communication.

If I ever move from being agnostic to believing, that is the kind of spiritual reality I crave.

I worry about the cynicism we seem to be harvesting as a society. It seems to be the most abundant and tastiest fruit and so we are all drawn to it.
If I had drawn this cartoon I might have titled it “Jesus Warms to Another Pleasing Petition.”
I am in wonder at the devotion, energy and heart that this kind man has for God’s children.
His home is a haven to the homeless and is busting at the rafters each night. His tears fall on the little bit of straw he allows himself each night while he is praying to God to do more for those he has turned away, though he even offers his stable.
He knows and has love for his neighbours. Those who cannot see to their own needs he cares for, to the best of his own ability. He transports the poor and lame on his own tired donkey; to the synagogue, the local healers, even here to Jesus’ home.
He gives all he can to the widows and orphans and his heart breaks when his purse is empty and there is no more to share.
Here in this room he comes face to face with God’s child and is filled with hope. He asks for great things. I think that Jesus believes that they are great and wonderful things.
This man has been a good child of God and he will continue to do all these things and GOD WILLING, more… “For your glory.”
Yes, I think that this is a lovely and heart warming cartoon. I choose a different paradigm. I believe that God does too.

After all, God cannot be bullied or harassed into giving us our selfish desires.
