Whistle-Blowers Club

All systems cultivate fear and encourage silence among its members. This cannot be found in their vision statements or goals or charters. Even though systems or organizations mean well, this cultivation of fear and the encouragement of silence predominates the system’s relationship with its members. It is not intentional or calculated. When it comes to that you have something like fascism.

It is very difficult to expose the problems in a system. It is considered betrayal. And to betray a system results in bad repercussions… even losing your job. You will pay a serious price for challenging, questioning or blowing the whistle on the system you are a member of. This is why it is so difficult to get whistle-blowers. It might cost them their lives… financially or maybe even physically.

I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago who expressed his frustration at the system he worked within. He had a problem with HR’s decision. He knew that if he challenged HR’s decision there would be negative repercussions. He would be blackballed, his check would get stalled in the system, and he might even lose his job.

I knew exactly what he was talking about because I experienced the same kind of dynamic in churches. I may have loved my work, but if (or should I say “when”?) I questioned the system it was considered paramount to biting the hand that fed me. You just don’t get away with that for very long.

Systems can’t be helped. They will always be with us. Even if whistle-blowers started a club, to blow the whistle on that club would incur the same repercussions.

I am a Methodist lay preacher in the UK, and once considered offering for full time ministry. But to have my mouth tied to my house and salary seemed like a huge risk. I decided to keep my independence!

nomad: at least evil can play in systems.
