freebie friday: 3 crosses

Welcome to another FREEBIE FRIDAY giveaway. I’m giving this fine art print away. Click on the image for a larger picture. This is not a photocopy. It is a fine art print of one of my large watercolors that took me a gazillion hours to paint. It measures almost 8″x10.5″ (20cm x 25cm) . It doesn’t come matted or framed. It is signed by me, the artist, dhayward.

This is based on a photograph Lisa took of me. At the time I was studying for my second Masters, this one in Ministry and Religion at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. I was being groomed for ordination in the Presbyterian Church in Canada. It wasn’t the route I had expected to take. I had started my PhD in New Testament Studies at Knox College, University of Toronto, in order to end up a teacher. But we had a baby and could no longer manage it. I was invited to switch paths to ministry. I was guaranteed a student charge while I studied and promised ordination and full-time ministry in 8 months. I took the deal. The student charge was in the Adirondack mountains in New York state. My commute to Montreal was only a couple of hours. This photo is of me standing by my favorite trout stream near Lake Placid, NY. I’m leaning against a tree. Notice that the 3 trees are actually crosses. I am fatigued and confused. I was wracked with doubt about what I was getting myself into.  The stream, by contrast, is fresh, flowing and full of life.

This is my favorite work of yours I’ve seen so far.

Even before I read the description I though “There’s a man who is lost in his life, yet the answer is right in front of him.”

Virtually speaking…I’ve stood at that same spot a few times the past couple years.

    Very cool.

Wow, this is fantastic. I know that place of uncertainty so well! But life is full of promise – and risk.

Even though you may have been unaware of it you were leaning on the cross, David. After reading your description I now appreciate this piece more than I would have. Will take care of this if I win the draw.

Beautiful image. Fresh flowing water has always been a powerful image for me of the untameable wildness of God- as contrasted with the starched stiffness of our religious institutions…
